August 5, 2020

Dear Parents,

To date, First Circle of Friends Preschool/Kindergarten teachers and church leadership have been working tirelessly trying to figure out how to make opening on September 8 work, but at this point, it simply won’t. For several reasons, our school will need to postpone opening until at least November.

COVID-19 guidance for preschools is probably coming out next week, but I was told by a representative from ODE that it wouldn’t look much different than the current guidance for K-12, meaning social distancing and face masks would be the new norm until viral conditions change. With social distancing and facial coverings, the classroom experience at First Circle of Friends would be dramatically different. Interactions between the children and teachers would be minimized, making learning and practicing social skills nearly impossible. Even with fewer children in the classroom, there would still be that sense of, “Why do I have to be here and do this alone?” Children love to play and learn together, and this cannot happen with the current restrictions.

Since close to 40% of our students have withdrawn at this point, leaving some classes with only four or five students, some classes would have to be completely cancelled and would require schedule changes. As you know, parents select classes based on family schedules, so I can’t arbitrarily switch you to another class just due to numbers.

Please understand the decision to postpone the start of preschool-K was not made lightly. Our school has always held the highest regard for the safety and well-being of students, families, and staff, and it’s this safety which guides the decision-making process.

We can’t predict what will be happening in the coming months with the virus and/or the community’s responses. If it appears safe and the classroom experience can achieve our long-standing aims, then we will reopen in November. If not, we’ll deal with that when the time comes. We will keep you informed, so watch your inboxes, please. We’ll also pay close attention to decisions made by the Oregon City School District administration to help inform our decision making process.

Some families had tuition, fees, and camp funds from last year applied to this year’s tuition. In order to keep the books cleaner, all of those funds will be returned to you. The registration fee of $150 will be held if you wish to keep a guaranteed enrollment spot for your child once we begin in-person school again. If you would like the registration fee refunded to you, please let me know, but understand we can’t guarantee a place for your child once school resumes. Once I know you want your deposit back, I’ll remove your name from email lists so as not to burden you with an overloaded inbox.

We will not be offering virtual or distance learning. Our school is centered around kids working with others and getting their hands on things to learn, and we’re not in a position right now to offer other platforms for instruction.

The issue of opening up for face-to-face learning asks more questions and provides few answers. We’ve made this decision knowing parent reactions will be everything from relieved to frustrated. There’s simply no way to make everyone happy. But what we CAN do is do our best to keep everyone safe, and be sure that when we have students in our classes, they’ll be getting the top-quality instruction First Circle of Friends is known for. To do that, we need to be patient, pray, and wait for God’s perfect timing.
